    For the searching heart

Often times I'll look at people's entries and they want viewers to read a passage.  Now I know most of us aren't into that and like to turn away.  But I ask you to take a look at two short passages I read out of C.S. Lewis' book Mere Christianity.  But hey, I suppose I'll understand if you don't.

"If we ask: 'Why ought I to be unselfish?' and you reply 'Because it is good for society' we may then ask, 'Why should I care about what's good for society except when it happens to pay me personally?' and then you will have to say, 'Because you ought to be unselfish' - which simply brings us back to where we started.  You are saying what is true, but you are not getting any further.  If a man asked what was the point of playing football, it would not be much good saying 'in order to score goals', for trying to score goals is the game itself, not the reason for the game, and you would really only be saying that football is football - which is true, but not worth saying.  In the same way, if a man asks what is the point in behaving decently, it is no good replying, 'in order to benefit society', for trying to benefit society, in other words being unselfish (for 'society' after all only means 'other people'), is one of the things decent behavior consists in; all you are really saying is that decent behavior is decent behavior.  You would have said just as much if you had stopped at the statement, 'Men ought to be unselfish.'"

Just think about that.  There's tons more that goes along with this paragraph alone.  If you want to read more, pick up the book!  It's a good read for ANYBODY.

And another, MUCH SHORTER, phrase regarding creation...

"If there was a controlling power outside the universe, it could not show itself to us as one of the facts inside the universe - no more than the architect of a house could actually be a wall or staircase or fireplace in that house."

    Crazy awesome.

  • "I Am Legend"....and God

Last night I had the opportunity to watch the movie "I Am Legend" with some loved ones.  It was alright.  I guess I'd recommend it to anyone who is looking to watch a movie....given you're of age.

However, during the movie, a concept jumped out at me and stayed on my many for much of the night after...and don't worry, I won't even begin to ruin the movie for you.   I mean, most of you know what it's about anyways.

So in the beginning when the city is being evacuated, Robert Neville (Will Smith) is helping his wife and child into a helicopter.  Because Robert is going to stay in the city, his wife prays over him, and the helicopter immediately takes off.

Now later in the movie, he meets another survivor.  After the woman he meets uses the Lord's name in vain, Robert responds, "God didn't do this, we did."

Then we jump ahead a little further.  Robert finds himself in a place that is frustrating from trying to solve this epidemical problem he currently has on his hands.  Him and Anna (the survivor) find themselves in a semi-argument.  The conversation is ended with Will Smith saying that "God's plan" is just a bunch of garbage and inevitably reaches the claim "There is no God!"

This jumped out at me as a truth for mankind.  Robert Neville believed in God up until he couldn't take it anymore.  It's amazing how anger and bitterness can turn one's belief system off.

I know that there are times in my life where my anger or my impatience will lead me to feelings of unbelief.  With God's grace, I overcome those feelings, but not on my own works any means.

Some of you may feel bitter, angry, or impatient.  You are fed up because you feel as though God has done nothing for you.  But truly, if you want to know the Lord, you have to be willing to humbly get rid of all the negative.  I mean, God is a gracious God, but for the most part He doesn't fully reveal himself to people who openly reject all that He is (with exceptions I suppose - Paul, etc.).

A psalmist wrote "Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him." (Psalm 34:8)

There is so much truth to that statement.  But it does say "take refuge" and that isn't just a half-effort prayer, or a "God give me a miracle that I can see and then I'll believe" sort of practice.  TAKE REFUGE in the Lord! Be willing to let Him take over your life!  Take what Christ did on the cross with thanks!  And meditate on how awesome it really is!

This my friends, is what life is all about.  I would be happy to get together with you and TRY to answer any questions you may have.  I can lay down important foundational steps for you to aid in your walk.  Just let me know!

Hope you all are well.  I hope this entry made sense.  When I make points, often times I tend to only make sense in my head, and have troubles laying it out on the computer.
